The gala concert paying tribute to the 70th anniversary of the 1956 revolution and freedom fight opens with one of Beethoven’s most renowned works. This set of movements was originally composed as incidental music for Goethe’s play about Count Egmont, who fought against foreign oppression in the 16th century before ultimately falling. Its overture became a symbol of freedom in Hungary in ’56. László Dubrovay composed his grandiose work, entitled 1956, for the 50th anniversary of the revolution. This is followed by Zoltán Kodály’s opus Psalmus hungaricus (meaning "Hungarian Psalm"), which ties in with the commemoration thanks to its sublime and poignant mood. The piece was written by the composer to mark the 50th year since the unification of Pest, Buda and Óbuda.
