Isle of the Dead, op. 128/3
Arnold Böcklin’s mysterious painting Isle of the Dead inspired numerous works of music including the pieces for orchestra by Sergei Rachmaninoff and Max Reger. Prior to these two musical tableaux, we will hear Rachmaninoff’s evergreen piano concerto, as well as the overture to Franz Schreker’s opera premièred in 1918. In its own time, the latter work was extremely successful, and has enjoyed renewed interest in recent years: it was staged at the Salzburg Festival, in Los Angeles and in Lyon.
