The Legend of Joseph (Josephslegende), op. 63

The National Philharmonic continues its series of concerts of dramatic works by Richard Strauss which have never or only rarely been performed in Hungary. The concert begins with a Strauss curiosity in the shape of music written in 1940 to honour the 2,600th anniversary of the Japanese Empire, a work that features Japanese temple gongs. The ballet The Legend of Joseph, which relates a biblical story, was commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev, the impresario of the Paris-based Ballets Russes, and premièred exactly a century ago. The piece will be accompanied by eye-catching choreography specially prepared for the occasion by Tamás Juronics, and brought to life by the Szeged Contemporary Ballet.

A joint production of the Hungarian National Philharmonic and the Palace of Arts

Presented by: Hungarian National Philharmonic, Palace of Arts
