The MET: Repeat of the live broadcast in HD at Müpa Budapest

The most famous love story in literature is now returning to the program of the Met HD Live broadcasts for the third time, this time featuring an American Juliette and a French Roméo in Gounod's operatic version. Nadine Sierra and Benjamin Bernheim, two of the current favourites of the New York Opera House, will have the opportunity to perform together in Bartlett Sher’s 2016 production. The conductor for this production is just as passionate and sweeping as the love story itself: he is none other than Yannick Nézet-Séguin.

Following in the footsteps of Roberto Alagna and Angela Gheorghiu, and Vittorio Grigolo and Diana Damrau, the Met's stage is now awaiting Bernheim and Sierra to take on the roles of Romeo and Juliet in a hit opera that both stays true and strays from Shakespeare's drama. It strays because a breeches role was added to the story by Gounod and his librettists: that of the charming and mischievous page, Stéphano, played by the young American mezzo-soprano Samantha Hankey in this performance, likely to be as successful as she was in the role of Octavian in the previous season. But it also stays true, as the essence of Romeo and Juliet’s youthful and poignant love remains the most important thing. This will be particularly moving with such radiant opera singers set to play the lead roles in this production. And, of course, youthful passion and testosterone overflow are also necessary on the stage of Romeo and Juliet, which will be portrayed by two excellent Afro-American singers, baritone Will Liverman and tenor Frederick Ballentine, in the roles of Mercutio and Tybalt.

The superior quality broadcasts in Müpa Budapest are screened in the original language with Hungarian and English subtitles.
