"Christoph Willibald Gluck, the innovative genius of 18th century opera, was born 300 years ago this year, in 1714. This evening, the Purcell Choir and Orfeo Orchestra salute his memory with a concert performance of one of his most influential works. The composer's first ‘reform opera', Orfeo ed Euridice, is based on the myth of Orpheus and will be heard here in the original Vienna version from 1762, with an Italian-language libretto by Ranieri de' Calzabigi. This work carries particular i...mportance for me because it was with this same score that I began my career as an opera conductor in 1991 when, at the age of 21, I was given the chance to conduct the first première of the Budapest Chamber Opera founded by Domokos Moldován. With this concert, I would also like to take the opportunity to express my respect for Moldován's decades of devoted work, for without his extraordinary efforts many important musical dramas of the 17th and 18th centuries would still not have been performed on the Hungarian opera stage to this day.” (György Vashegyi)
