What kind of person do you have to be to come up with an idea like the Müpa Drive-In Cinema in the time of the coronavirus? A resourceful one, like Mozart and Rossini's cunning hero Figaro, who finds a solution for every problem. This concert of highlights from the two operas features top Hungarian opera singers Emőke Baráth, Gábor Bretz and Péter Kálmán, along with many others of no little renown. Conducting the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra will be the internationally acclaimed Gergely Madaras. Figaro inside, in the theatre, and outside, in the car park.

Although it is a relatively rare phenomenon in the history of music for the same hero to appear in operas by different composers, it has happened, and more than once too. What makes this evening special is that the two operas treat two different phases of the hero's life. Mozart and Rossini did this 30 years apart from each other. The Viennese classical composer ventured forth into the barber/butler's more mature years in 1786, while the master of the bel canto related the 'prequel' in 1816. Both librettos are based on works from the series of dramas of French writer Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais. Palpable in Mozart's masterpiece are the first gusts of wind from the approaching revolution: more than one part of Le nozze di Figaro refers to social inequalities, and it also offers a singularly complex analysis of the psychological processes that drive the countess and the count. And Rossini? Il barbiere di Siviglia is an authentic comic opera: light as champagne, full of carefree laughter, it relates a story brimming with twists and turns. Excerpt from both works on the same night: a unique opportunity and splendid occasion to come face to face with two epochal masterpieces.
