The Palace of Arts marks the 200th anniversary of Ferenc Erkel’s birth with a screening of Csaba Káel’s film of his opera Bánk bán that was filmed by none other than the great Oscar winning Hungarian cameraman Vilmos Zsigmond. The screening will emulate the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts with the excellence of both picture and sound, and it is worth noting that some of the Hungarian singers in the film have also performed to great acclaim on the Met stage. At our Preface event before the performa...nce, the discussion centres on experiences in New York, the filming and on Erkel’s music. The film helped familiarise opera lovers all over the world with Erkel’s music, and it was well received critically: “Csaba Káel's new film version of a Hungarian opera masterpiece, Ferenc Erkel's Bánk Bán, is ultimately an invaluable entry in the opera-on-film library.” Robert Kochler – Variety, Los Angeles “The most successful fusion of opera and film yet seen.” Laura Emerick – Chicago Sun Times
