A new production from the Met.
Gaetano Donizetti gained immortality for his operas L'Elisir d'Amore, Don Pasquale and Lucia di Lammermoor, but his three important works on Tudor themes were revived only much later in the mid-20th century, a century after the composer's death. The wonderful American soprano Sondra Radvanovsky has taken on the roles of all three of Donizetti's Tudor queens in the course of a single season, a rare accomplishment not seen on a New York stage since the legendary Beverly Sills more than four decades previously. Elizabeth I is in itself a bravura role for any performer, and the closing scene of Roberto Devereux one of the most moving and difficult in the bel canto repertoire. The title role is sung here by Matthew Polenzani, who made his debut at the Metropolitan in 1997 and has appeared in more than 20 productions since, often in lead roles. The earl's secret lover is brought to life by internationally acclaimed Latvian mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča, while the Duke of Nottingham is sung by Met regular Mariusz Kwiecień, the Polish baritone who has enjoyed a glittering career since his debut at the New York opera in 1999.
This powerful piece in the Tudor trilogy directed by David McVicar is conducted by the Italian Maurizio Benini, renowned for his wonderful interpretations of Donizetti's works.
