Parafarm Libretto: András Visky (based on George Orwell’s Animal Farm, with texts by Christian Morgenstern and György Petri) Unfinished Conjugation – jeux-danse macabre Libretto: András Visky (based on a one minute novel by István Örkény) The Final Sour Cherry Stone Libretto: Aladár Lászlóffy (based on a one minute novel by István Örkény with additional texts) Attila Demény lives in Transylvania, Romania and is a leading figure in the Hungarian music life. He composes music, directs oper...as, conducts, plays the piano, organises festivals and through his diverse activities, has acquired an international reputation. Since 1987 he has been director at the Cluj Hungarian Opera. His compositions are characterised by a unique style that unifies various 20th century musical languages. His restrained expressionistic musical language enables him to deal with important Central-East European stories from the turn of the century. These have included vocal chamber cycles based on works by Sándor Weöres, László Nagy and Géza Szőcs, chorus works, instrumental pieces and three chamber operas, of which Parafarm was written in 1992, Unfinished Conjugation – jeux-danse macabre in 2001, and The Final Sour Cherry Stone in 2007. “The three works each are expressed in a different musical language and yet they belong together. Parafarm is the story of a revolution gone wrong, Unfinished Conjugation about solitude, hopelessness, stupidity, while The Final Sour Cherry Stone is about the cluelessness of the last four surviving Hungarians. All three stories are personal and about communal existential situations in which a meaningful coherent dialogue is barely possible. Instead memories, emotions and moods burst up from the deep. This is the story of the losers, of the continuous battles, or disappointments, of solitude, of daftness, or rather, of a grand expedition chasing dispelled illusions.” (Attila Demény)
