Sonatina for Clarinet and Piano (1981)

Having only recently left behind winning prizes at prestigious competitions, Carlos Ferreira is already serving as the first clarinettist of the Orchestre National de France and plays chamber music with such partners as Emmanuel Pahud and Hilary Hahn. His Rising Stars concert promises to delight us with the sheer variety of music written for his instrument, ranging from French Late Romanticism to lighter jazzy sounds from the 20th century and contemporary pieces. In the latter respect, his pianist partner, Pedro Emanuel Pereira, also a composer, will guides us on a tour through the pair’s native Portugal with one of them, while the new composition written at the request of ECHO – which will be played for the first time at Müpa Budapest – is the work of Lanqing Ding, a Chinese composer living in Paris who is often inspired by nature and literature.

Nominated for the Rising Stars programme by: Casa da Música Porto, Fundação Gulbenkian Lisbon, The Glasshouse International Centre for Music
