The instruments glitter golden in the light. Their sound is smooth yet powerful. They are extremely difficult to play, yet when musicians perform on them, they radiate with happiness, and, of course, make it all seem so easy. Even when this music is played in a concert hall, we feel as though we are listening in the open air. This is brass music.

'Is this actually chamber music?' some might ask. Why, of course it is! After all, the Canadian Brass is not a brass band. They are a brass quintet with two trumpet players, a trombonist, a horn player and a tuba player. All of the members, when they want to, can play very quietly (and there's no doubt they they are proud of their tender, slower pieces), while each also has his own solo, of course. This is undoubtedly chamber music at its finest and this band, as the programme illustrates, is capable of playing just about anything as one of the best brass ensembles in the world.
We have an opera overture and a bit of Bach, some folk music arrangements, some jazz and some Dixieland, while the group will also perform cherished excerpts from one of the most popular operas of all time, Carmen, alongside the Venice Carnival and Schumann's Carnival. Of course, there will be a bit of Bach here, and some The Magic Flute there: after all, the basic premise of the show is that it is carnival time, so why shouldn't we have a bit of fun with our chamber music?
For centuries and all over the world, the players of brass instruments have been lads filled with joy, even if they are global stars fully capable of blowing the stars down from the sky. Brass chamber music has a simple and timeless message that may strike you at any time during the evening's entertainment: life is joyous, life is beautiful.

The concert will be preceded from 6.30 pm by a conversation entitled Prelude, where ticket holders will be invited to get to know the performing musician and the works to be performed more closely.
