Encaenia Musices, op. 1

The composers of the works to be heard this evening were all born - and in most cases, produced their music - in the 17th century, with the creative careers of only a few lasting into the first half of the 18th century. What they all have in common is that they pursued their musical activities largely in the various courts of the Habsburg Empire. This period saw much of the exchange between the numerous musical centres, royal and aristocratic courts in Europe take place thanks to the wanderings of composers and virtuoso instrumentalists, facilitating the spread of a variety of creative influences. Many of these composers knew each other personally, maintained correspondence, or had some kind of connection through their music. The most famous and influential among them were probably Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber, Georg Muffat and Johann Joseph Fux, but the works on this evening's programme by other, minor masters provide added nuance to the picture the audience will gain of the exceptionally high quality, richness and variety of the music composed during this period.
