Conductor:

Iván Fischer

Featuring:

cello Nicolas Altstaedt

Saint-Saëns

Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op. 33

Bruckner

Symphony No. 7 in E major

Romanticism writ large – as expressed by a French and an Austrian composer. In the first half of the concert, Saint-Saëns’s cello concerto will ring out, a work of extreme emotional contrasts and often fiery intensity. Both Rachmaninoff and Shostakovich regarded it as one of the greatest cello concertos ever written. The soloist is Nicolas Altstaedt, whom international critics consider a storyteller in a league of his own. Audiences hang on every note he plays. After the interval, Iván Fischer will conduct Bruckner’s monumental Symphony No. 7, a work lasting more than an hour that brought the composer his greatest success. Surprising as it may seem, the two pieces converge on Wagner. While conservatives found Saint-Saëns too modern, Wagner himself called him a prophet. Likewise, Bruckner deeply admired his German contemporary and paid homage to him on multiple occasions in his own music.
