Beethoven

Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125

“The Ninth” – nothing more needs to be said, everyone knows which masterpiece we are talking about. Beethoven’s last, longest and most monumental symphony is at once the calling card of a genius, of a rebellious artist, and a celebration of all humanity. It is a work that pushes boundaries in every sense, indeed, it demolishes them by introducing the human voice into a purely instrumental genre. In the finale, the choir proclaims that “all men shall become brothers”. The Budapest Festival Orchestra’s favourite guest artists return to interpret Beethoven’s universal musical and philosophical ideas: a Swedish soprano, a Dutch mezzo-soprano, a British tenor and a German bass-baritone. Together with the Pan-European Choir and the Hungarian National Choir, the concert will be a truly international affair as they join in singing Schiller’s immortal words, the Anthem of the European Union.
