An American in Paris

The Budapest Philharmonic has been keeping the legacy of Ferenc Erkel alive for 168 years now, and at this anniversary concert, as constant and committed supporters of "new Hungarian music", they will present a contemporary Hungarian work by Zoltán Kovács, along with a sampling of French and American music to showcase their versatility, all under the baton of their previous chief conductor and music director Rico Saccani.

The other pillar of the evening is the world première of the work Ludus Luminis by composer Zoltán Kovács, a believer in classical beauty who has won both the Erkel and Bartók-Pásztory awards. This will be followed by Ravel's Piano Concerto in G major, featuring Zoltán Fejérvári, the winner of the 2017 Montreal Piano Competition and one of the world's top young pianists, as the soloist. In addition to the music of Mozart and Saint-Saëns, Ravel was also greatly influenced by American jazz in writing the concerto, as were the composers of the two pieces being performed in the second part of the concert. Leonard Bernstein compiled his orchestral suite Symphonic Dances from the music of West Side Store in 1961, quoting such popular tunes from the dramatic work as Somewhere, Mambo and Maria. Just as Ravel winks at jazz in the first part of the concert, George Gershwin winks back at Europe at the end of the concert: his An American in Paris evokes the enchanting and vibrant world of the 1920s. Conducting all of this will be Rico Saccani, an internationally renowned Italian conductor and former chief conductor and artistic director of the Budapest Philharmonic.
