A new production from the Met.

Alban Bergs last, incomplete opera, Lulu is one of those works like Richard Strausss Salome, Bartóks The Miraculous Mandarin and Stravinskys The Rite of Spring which caused a huge scandal at their premires in the early decades of the 20th century on account of their themes and musical settings, but which today are regarded as unquestioned masterpieces. William Kentridge, the director of this new production at the Metropolitan Opera, gained international fame primarily with his compelling animated films using his own drawings and prints a technique which naturally plays a leading role in this uniquely visualised staging.
Lulu, the femme fatale who dominates the work, shattering lives including her own, is a universal character of many faces who conquers in every sphere. Marlis Petersen is perfectly suited to the role. A winner of six prestigious piano competitions before she turned to singing, she is now regarded worldwide as among the best and most authentic interpreters of the role of Lulu. The other members of the cast also belong among the vanguard. Susan Graham is one of the New York operas leading mezzo-sopranos, while Daniel Brenna has taken audiences by storm in recent years at La Scala in Milan, the Bavarian State Opera and the Salzburg Festival alike. He also sang one of the lead roles in a production of Schoenbergs opera Moses and Aaron conducted by Zoltán Kocsis in Miskolc in 2009, and again at Müpa Budapest in 2010. The Dane Johan Reuter is another singer highly sought-after today, who has sung almost all the major baritone roles in the operatic repertoire. The conductor for this production is the legendary James Levine, record-breaking music director of the Metropolitan Opera for more than 40 years.
