Dominating this concert by Barnabás Kelemen and the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra are the Mediterranean temperament and the Spanish sense of life. It consists solely of compositions that are full of colours and glow at a high temperature: in addition to two works by Ravel, one by de Falla and one by Saint-Saëns, there will also be an early virtuoso concerto piece by the Hungarian composer Jenő Hubay.

Bookending the evening are the two Ravel pieces: the Rapsodie espagnole and Bolero. The latter is the composer's most popular composition, in which the same theme is repeated with greater and greater intensity and with changing instrumentations, while the beat of the snare drum lends the rhythm its unrelenting constancy. First performed in November 1928, it was precisely because of its amazingly original ideas that Bolero provoked antagonistic reactions: one woman, for example, bluntly declared that its creator was a fool. Jenő Hubay composed his Carmen Fantasy, originally written for violin and piano, in 1876, immediately after the 1875 première of Bizet's famous opera. The violinist/composer performed the fantasy at his concert in Paris in 1880, with Saint-Saëns himself in the audience. The French artist later spoke very warmly of Hubay.
