Johann Sebastian was born on March 21st 1685 in the great musical Bach family dynasty. During his sixty-five years of life he worked as a musician for royal courts and churches. He married twice, sired twenty-one children, worked hard, travelled rarely and lived modestly. In his lifetime, not a single work of his was published; a few decades after his death, he was largely forgotten by the world. Then in 1829 a young musician in Leipzig by the name of Felix Mendelssohn discovered the score of th...e Matthew Passion and premièred it in Berlin. This was the day of Bach’s resurrection. Goethe’s friend, the composer, conductor and music teacher Carl Friedrich Zelter, wrote to the poet, saying: “This Leipzig cantor is the manifestation of God: pure and yet inexplicable.” In this two part lecture-concert series by Xaver Varnus we can follow Bach’s life in chronological order, with filmed segments and other documents of the original locations. But more importantly: we hear the music interpreted by great musicians and if anyone has ever had any doubts then by the end of the second concert, it will be crystal clear why Johann Sebastian Bach is considered by many as the greatest composer of Western music.
