Mediterranean festivities, Italian and Spanish tales, ballet music, marketplace comedies, operatic dramas and remarkable situations—the Fabula foletta (playful tale) offers all these and more. In Ravel’s Alborada del gracioso, we hear a clown’s early morning serenade. Mozart’s Piano Concerto in A-flat major has no program, yet it evokes a poignant story. Casella wrote a fairy-tale opera, while de Falla composed ballet suites. These works do not stray too far from tradition, yet they playfully and sometimes grotesquely depict worlds where serious and humorous elements can coexist.
