Symphony No. 1 in D major (“Titan”)
We are delighted to be able to welcome back to Müpa Budapest one of the world’s most successful orchestras. The Vienna Symphony Orchestra, which turns 125 this year, raised the roof at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall in 2021. Their virtuouso soloist, the superb Russian pianist Anna Vinnitskaya, was once the winner of the Queen Elisabeth Competition held in Brussels. Originally a bassoon player, the talented young Czech musician Petr Popelka has been chief conductor of the ensemble since 2023. They arrive with a programme of works all with ties to Vienna: Richard Strauss’s Festmusik commissioned by the city and Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 need no explanation, but Ravel’s Piano Concerto in D major for the Left Hand also has very close links to Vienna as the composer wrote the piece for the Austrian Paul Wittgenstein.
