An Evening with Zsuzsa Takács
16 December 2013 Monday
7 pm - 9 pm
Glass Hall
Literarium – Contemporary Writers at Müpa Budapest
Featuring Nádor Quartet
Featuring actors Piroska Molnár and József Wunderlich

Zsuzsa Takács is an extraordinary presence in contemporary Hungarian literature, one of those writers whose absence would make the world a poorer place. In both her personality and her art, the subtle oscillations of the female soul are married to intellectual self-control, and an imaginary world of broad perspectives created with meticulous care and the discipline of refined form. Representing one of the high points in the Hungarian literature of our times, her verse – growing ever richer from volume to volume since her first work published in the 1970s (Némajáték) – has consolidated a poetic voice which, in an endlessly refined, economical and yet extraordinarily powerful language, brings deep suffering and profound meaning to the surface. What makes the lyric poetry of Takács so unique and captivating is that it addresses and touches readers in a compellingly personal way, not isolating them but highlighting the staying power of moral resistance in the face of solitude and abandonment. In this way, her poetry is not merely “entrancing,” but at once unsettling and calming: its understated dramatic character provides a foothold and an aid to living. A meeting with this artist, in the company of the Nádor Quartet, promises to be no everyday occasion. Our visitors are kindly informed that this performance will be presented in Hungarian.
