May's Literarium evening is devoted to a poet who shuns the limelight, and even the stage. Aspirations of attention, power and exhibitionism are all alien to him. However, this shy and unassuming figure conceals an enormously rich, multi-layered and poetic world gained through deep suffering: Artisjus Prize-winner Péter Kántor is one of Hungary's most sensitive and reliable modern poets. His career, extending from The Pebble (1976) and Let's Keep It Between Us (2012), includes 11 high-quality books of verse making up a unique and incomparable lyrical oeuvre. Through his work, he filters the defining legacy of Attila József and István Kormos and the great impact they had on him. As he reinterprets their poetry, he ennobles it into a sovereign poetic world.

With its unmistakable tone, Péter Kántor's poetry is a highly influential and incomparable synthesis of unrelenting quality. It is traditionalism based on respect for literary forebears and a lyrical modernity expressing the drama of 21st century man in the language of the era. A handrail on the staircase of life, it is something we are free to grasp at moments of both joy and sorrow in our everyday lives. This glimpse into Péter Kántor's lyrical workshop will be made even more memorable on this day by the noted pianist Gábor Csalog.
