Bernstein and American Music

4 February 2018

1 day, 11 concerts, 500 minutes of pure music and an atmosphere like no other. Held in co-operation with the Budapest Festival Orchestra, and one of the most popular and anticipated annual events of Müpa Budapest, the Marathon puts on display the works of a given composer each season, their pieces played by the most intriguing musicians of the Hungarian music scene. Held at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall and the Festival Theatre, the recitals start late morning and last until late in the evening each day.

Past instalments of the Marathon featured Tchaikovsky, Bach, Beethoven, Bartók, Mozart, Schubert, Dvořák and Stravinsky while last year, in 2016, we broke with tradition, showcasing two composers in Felix Mendelssohn and Robert Schumann. This year, in 2017, the limelight was on Brahms. In 2018, the eleventh Marathon will focus on the Grand Master of the American Dream: Leonard Bernstein. And once again, we will go against tradition by showcasing the very best of 20th century American music.

On the day of the Marathon, Müpa Budapest will host eleven 45-minute long mini concerts. The chamber pieces will be performed in the Festival Theatre, and the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall will be the venue for the orchestral pieces. Students of the Liszt Academy of Music will be performing at the Glass hall throughout the day; attendance at these latter Glass hall concerts is free of charge. In addition, those coming to the Marathon for more than music will be shown projection shows at the Müpa Budapest Auditorium and an exhibition in the foyer.

The ticket price for the mini concerts is HUF 990. Buy tickets for three mini concerts and attend a fourth for free! This way you can listen to all 11 concerts for a total price of only HUF 8,910 instead of the full price of HUF 10,890.

In order to take advantage of the Marathon discount online, add the tickets for all the performances you wish to see to your cart. In your cart, you can check – depending on the number of concerts selected – to which performance(s) you are receiving your tickets as a gift, i.e. at a price of HUF 0.

Please note that the tickets you receive for free upon the use of the discount must also be added to your cart.
