“Bravo Boris!” – New Director and a Breakthrough Success for New York Premiere

The production of Boris Godunov, put on within the framework of the transmissions “The Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD” on October 23, underwent a crisis period before the premiere. German director of the production Peter Stein, who had been working on Mussorgsky’s grandiose opera for over a year, abruptly faced unsolvable difficulties with his visa. The performance was saved by American Stephen Wadsworth, who officially became the new director of the piece.

UNESCO Award for Márta Sebestyén

Márta Sebestyén received the award Artist for Peace of the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) at the Paris headquarters of the organisation on Tuesday evening. The acknowledgement was presented to the folk singer by UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova. Since the establishment of the award Artist for Peace of the Paris-based organisation, this was the first time for a Hungarian artist to obtain the acknowledgement.

Liszt! In all Respects.

A press conference was held by the Palace of Arts and its resident institutions on October 12, focusing on the events of the 2010/2011 season. Inevitably, mention was made of the financial difficulties, emphasising that the managements and troupes nevertheless continued their work in a basically optimistic atmosphere. The 2011 season bears the motto: Liszt! In all Respects.

Imre Kiss Receives High Rank French Award

A few months after winning the International Merit of Honour Award of ISPA (International Society for Performing Arts) as the first awardee in the region, General Manager of the Palace of Arts Imre Kiss has been presented with the Knight’s grade of the Order of Arts and Letters of the Republic of France. The award was presented by François Laquièze on behalf of French Minister of Culture and Communication Frédéric Mitterrand.

In memoriam Lászlo Polgár (1947–2010)

In the beginning he was Count Ceprano in Rigoletto, Osmin in The Abduction from the Seraglio, Seneca in Poppea by Monteverdi, Fiesco  in Boccanegra, and later he played the Grand Inquisitor, then King Philip in Don Carlos, followed by Count Walter in Luisa Miller. He was an impressive Sarastro, a laugh-raising Don Basilio, a thrilling Sparafucile, an unforgettable Gurnemanz and King Marke. He was considered the best Bluebeard of all time. With his voice - that was also trained with Hans Hotter - and with his deep intellect he was a singer of very special quality.

The Monday Night Jazz series is continuing at the Palace of Arts (MÜPA). MÜPA doesn’t just track the movements of the Hungarian jazz scene, it leads with its creative concert programs. Together with its series called Monday Night Jazz – a longtime staple - MÜPA introduces the genre’s Hungarian stars as well as the non-conformist young rebels, covering the broadest spectrum possible. Programming after the summer holidays includes a unique concert of two drummers, the debut of a singer’s new album, as well as a brand new show of a Hungarian jazz veteran.

Budapest Mahler Festival at the Palace of Arts for the 6th time

The Palace of Arts (MÜPA), the Budapest Festival Orchestra, the Hungarian Radio and the Hungarian Gustav Mahler Society organize the Budapest Mahler Festival jointly for the 6th time on 9-12 September; the Festival is inaugurated on 9th September in the foyer of MÜPA by Tamás Konok, painter and Iván Fisher, the event’s music director.
