“Bravo Boris!” – New Director and a Breakthrough Success for New York Premiere

2010. October 22.

The production of Boris Godunov, put on within the framework of the transmissions “The Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD” on October 23, underwent a crisis period before the premiere. German director of the production Peter Stein, who had been working on Mussorgsky’s grandiose opera for over a year, abruptly faced unsolvable difficulties with his visa. The performance was saved by American Stephen Wadsworth, who officially became the new director of the piece.

After the premiere on October 11, however, critiques only talked of “an unusual amalgam of talents”, with special acknowledgement of René Pape in the title role who, having won the title “Met Mastersinger”, is to meet his audience at an individual show on October 27.
