Featuring:

host András Réz

“The Don bend, the Isonzo and Mohács behind them / The Hungarians are proud now, and sing in the world…” It was 40 years ago that the Hobo Blues Band released their album Esztrád, which recalled the 6-3 victory by the Mighty Magyars at Wembley Stadium in 1953. Anyone who wished to understand it, understood. Football is the undisputed landlocked flagship of the Hungarian state control and entertainment industries. Starting with 1951’s A Civil a pályán (‘Try and Win’), a dozen films have come out in this country with plots revolving around the sport – such as Két félidő a pokolban (Two Halves in Hell), Régi idők focija (Football of the Good Old Days), Mérkőzés (The Match), 6:3, and so on. Shot in 1956, The Miracle Striker turned into a satire, one conveying the social sentiment that culminated in the October revolution. The premiere was postponed, and then – because the screenwriter (Tibor Méray) and two of the actors (Imre Pongrácz and Ferenc Puskás) had left the country – the film was cosmetically reworked, until it was finally released in the autumn of 1957. Now everyone will get the chance to see how much their ideas have aged.

In the original Hungarian, without subtitles.

The screening will be preceded and followed by a discussion in Hungarian.
