Wagner

Die Walküre, WWWV 86b – The Ride of the Valkyries – Dessert

A hearty German musical “menu” would be almost inconceivable without Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Wagner. The selected works from these three composers are sure to give the young audience an insight into the rich traditions of German music. Mendelssohn’s Wedding March is probably the best-known wedding music in the world, and was inspired by Shakespeare’s ever-popular comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The main course is provided by the opening movement to Beethoven’s Eroica symphony, which was considered revolutionary in its day. Two dramatic courses of this stature can only be followed by a captivating finale, one of the most famous pieces of Wagner’s oeuvre. The Ride of the Valkyries has been used in countless films, with good reason. These works reveal a truly remarkable world of musical flavour, spiced with Szilveszter Szélpál’s refined commentary.
