It is not an infrequent occurrence for the instrumentalists of the orchestras of major opera houses, in the spirit of multifacetedness, to form their own symphonic ensembles. This is exactly what the musicians of Milan’s La Scala, with the encouragement of Claudio Abbado, did in 1982. The Filarmonica della Scala has already taken the stage at Müpa Budapest several times: on this occasion they will be performing under the baton of Lorenzo Viotti, a young star conductor with extraordinary charisma. Serving as the soloist for the piece in the middle of the programme, Dvořák’s extremely popular Cello Concerto, is Gautier Capuçon, one of the finest cellists of our time. The two works bookending it, Berio’s arrangement of the final movement of Boccherini’s string quintet Musica notturna delle strade di Madrid, and Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet Suite, will showcase the diversity of 20th-century music.
