Symphony No. 1, H. 289
A Czech conductor, three Czech composers and a Czech violinist: in short, a Czech concert. The programme opens with a suite from Janáček’s most unique opera, The Cunning Little Vixen, followed by (Dvořák’s son-in-law) Josef Suk’s Fantasy, which could be considered a kind of violin concerto. Playing the solo part will be Jan Mráček, whose pinpoint intonation, phenomenal musicality and technical skill have earned him comparisons from critics to such virtuosos as Joshua Bell and Itzhak Perlman. The programme concludes with Martinů’s Symphony No. 1, a work dating from the composer’s mature years. A dedicated emissary of Czech music, Jakub Hrůša also serves as the music director of the Bamberg Symphony and Covent Garden.
