Ludwig Museum

The Ludwig Museum occupies the wing of the building closest to the Danube and is Hungary's only museum dedicated exclusively to the collection and display of contemporary art. It houses a significant collection of modern international and Hungarian fine art.

The Ludwig Museum moved into the Müpa Budapest building in 2005, where it occupies a space housing the latest in museum technology on three stories and over a total space of 3,300 m2. Taking account of the changing role of museums in society, it has a particular focus on interactivity and the function of the exhibition space as a mediator. This reflects the new and fundamentally changed attitudes and demands of visitors with regard to the display, promotion and democratisation of cultural values.

The lighting conditions and adaptability of rooms is a key element in the design of any museum. With this in mind, top experts in the field provided valuable technical input in the design phase. The hall set aside for temporary exhibitions allows a variety of lighting effects to be employed thanks to a layer of film concealed beneath the suspended ceiling, while natural light is filtered into the permanent exhibition area. As a block built solely for exhibition purposes, the Ludwig Museum is a world-class display space.

In collaboration with domestic and international organisations and partner institutions, the Ludwig Museum hosts eight or nine exhibitions each year. These have helped it play an increasingly important part in artistic discourse in recent years.

The museum also runs independent educational programmes for children, allowing it to serve an important function as an active and interactive meeting place for people of all ages interested in and open to the arts.

Tickets for Müpa shows are valid for one free visit to exhibitions at the Ludwig Museum up to the day of the show concerned.
