Randy Brecker – trumpet, Tony Lakatos – soprano and tenor saxophone, Gary Thomas, Rick Margitza – tenor saxophone, Béla Szakcsi Lakatos, Kálmán Oláh – piano, Boris Kozlov – double bass, Adam Nussbaum – drums Michael Brecker passed away on January 13th 2007, but his fans still have his wonderful recordings and memories of him in concert. Nor should we forget the musical heritage he passed on to those who succeeded him. His sound, his inventiveness, his ceaseless questing for new paths and the way he continually pushed aside the frontiers of jazz styles made him one of the most celebrated and admired of all tenor saxophonists. He began his solo album career in 1986 and rounded it off with Pilgrimage released after his death, on which he explores the moving depths and heights with his partners Herbie Hancock, Brad Mehldau, Pat Metheny, John Patitucci and Jack DeJohnette. The artistic director of this massive memorial concert is Brecker’s former friend, Hungarian born tenor saxophonist Tony Lakatos who now lives in Germany. We’ll hear Brecker’s compositions and other pieces he enjoyed playing in arrangements by the likes of Kálmán Oláh written specially for this international line-up. We are especially pleased to announce that Michael’s brother Randy Brecker has agreed to play. We’ll also have the chance to see two top tenor saxophonists from the middle generation, Gary Thomas and Rick Margitza, and from Brecker’s former rhythm section, Russian born – but now New York resident – Boris Kozlov and Adam Nussbaum, who has already performed at the Palace of Arts. Behind the piano will be two superb Hungarian pianists Béla Szakcsi Lakatos and Kálmán Oláh. This looks to be a concert of the highest calibre.
