25-year-old Csík Band
17 May 2013 Friday
5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Béla Bartók National Concert Hall

For more than a decade the Csík Band concentrated on playing distinctly old-style peasant music and was initially known mainly in folk dance house circles. The band began to make a name for itself in concert halls around the turn of the millennium, and performed as a representative of Hungarian folk music at the opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympics in 2000. This period also saw the beginning of a new musical journey for the band. On the title track of their 2001 album A kor falára, they slipped from a traditional Magyarpalatka tune into a swing rhythm. With the 2005 recording Senki nem ért semmit, the group again moved forward: alongside music from historic Upper Hungary, Békés County and Transylvania, the album also featured three songs by Hungarian indie band Kispál és a Borz which proved as easy to adapt to the Hungarian folk music style as to the sound of the Csík Band itself. With this marriage of Hungarian folk and rock was born the genre of “traditional ethno-rock,” in which “folk music swallowed rock.” Presented by: Fonó Buda House of Music
