Le Dernier Métro - In French, with Hungarian subtitles

Truffaut, the critic who became a New Wave director, was much more severe and unforgiving in his writings than he was in his films. While Godard was and is inextricably linked to the anarchic cinematic language of the French New Wave, Truffaut was gentler and more indulgent. And as time passed, he became even more so. Especially when love was involved, and his films never attempted to shun emotionally laden human relationships. Le Dernier Métro is a love story that takes place in German-occupied Paris. Actress Marion Steiner (Catherine Deneuve) takes over running the theatre she and her Jewish husband own, while he, the former director, hides in the basement. And then Marion falls in love with Bernard (Gérard Depardieu), the new member of the company.
A light, very French, story of a love triangle? Not in the least. But nor does blood need to flow in order for a story whose protagonists want nothing more than to live their lives to develop. Le Dernier Métro is film about compromises and a meditation on whether one can keep one's poise and dignity and make moral decisions while living under a power bent on taking away one's liberty. And one's life.

This film screening is taking place with the support of the Institut Français.
