In the history of Hungarian cinema, besides films that capture the zeitgeist, feature films made in a documentary style, satires and other generic experiments, a series of so-called "1950s films” grew to become a significant trend in the mid-1970s. Cinematic 1956 retro began to emerge at the same time as 1960s retro, at the turn of the decade. This tendency coincided with a decline in modernist filmmaking: for his 1956 drama, Pál Sándor adopts a more traditional means of storytelling than ...his earlier films in what was a markedly New Wave beginning to his career. The boy asks the father the great vital question of the 1960s: 'Why did communists devour communists here?'
The question, however, as in every film of Pál Sándor, is embedded in a very personal and passionate tale of individual fate. The protagonist, 16-year-old Dániel, leaves for the West in December 1956 in pursuit of his love who is heading for America. He is joined by Angeli from the same building, who is forced to flee because of his role in the armed fighting. In a hellish night spent in a hotel near the border, both boys are disillusioned by their travelling companions - Dániel by the girl's cynical and grasping parents, Angeli by the cruelties of his former secret policeman father - and they turn back…
