István Szabó’s confessional camera, using tracking shots in the style of the French New Wave, portrays the devastating fate befalling private lives in Eastern Europe in the intimate language of emotions. The film is itself an extended dance, the danse macabre of history where everything is in motion. Even childhood love is pregnant with fear, as the children endure the execution of their favourite teacher Bözsi, then run among the sirens in the siege of Budapest with objects concealed in a littl...e green knapsack. Following the communist takeover, they are forced to hide from their own fellow Pioneers, and to run among the tanks in the Uprising of 1956. Kata defects, while years later Jancsi, on a train bound for France, recalls the fears they experienced together and the memories of a love that has lasted since childhood. Our visitors are kindly informed that this film will be screened in Hungarian. Presented by: Palace of Arts, MaNDA
