The film is more nostalgic and elegiac, less grotesque and “caterwauling” than the play of the same title by István Örkény, and was taken to task accordingly by contemporary critics. Today, there has been a reappraisal of the subtlety with which director Károly Makk and cinematographer János Tóth portrayed old age, human fallibility when confronted by death and the intuitive processes of the consciousness, using, among other techniques, the tools of silent film and other photographic genres. Cat...’s Play was nominated for an Oscar in 1975.
