János Térey, who was born in 1970 and passed away in 2019, arguably had the most brilliant, expansive, thematically and registrally varied career, the most expansive in terms of genre, in short the most poetic - in the widest sense of the word - career of any Hungarian writer in recent decades.

The audience for the evening will follow his life's path to its conclusion, as Térey's poetically planned 'Autumn Campaign' unfolds across a range of formats. It is the story of a tenacious, self-raised man, from being orphaned at an early age to the trials and tribulations of searching for a home to call his own and the arduous happiness of becoming a father and starting a family. He was a systematic invader, from Debrecen to Zugló and Újlipótváros in Budapest (not to mention Warsaw, Dresden, New York, Istanbul and Athens), then the hills of Svábhegy. The expansion of his poetic 'spatial power' - from his initial 'natural arrogance' to the measured expressions of an impassive "modest proposal” and the unusually resounding, sonorous voice of the "August of his life”. The constant redefining of his poetic space - from abrasive self-mythologisation to generational self-examination and responsible national awareness. In terms of the history of Hungarian poetry, we can safely say that the anti-poetical thesis of István Domonkos's cult poem Kormányeltörésben (The Government Snaps), published in the year after Térey's birth, was poetically reinterpreted and reversed by Térey, who renewed obsolete forms of private and public poetry: think collectively, think privately. This thoughtful selection from the literary critic and university professor Sándor Bazsányi will seek to illuminate every vital angle and subtle shade of a life's work that may have been cut painfully short, but which remains incredibly rich.
