This should be no surprise for anyone familiar with Martin McDonagh's dramatic work, given that the Irish-British author is one of the most extraordinary figures in contemporary theatre. Many of his plays have been performed in Hungary (including The Cripple of Inishman, The Lonesome West and The Pillowman), while he also directed the film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which garnered seven Oscar nominations.
After a hit gone wrong, some gang bosses send the young gangster at fault in the hit to Bruges. He is accompanied by a slightly more wizened criminal. Bruges is the venue, and to some extent the city functions as the trigger for the events that will fundamentally change the lives of them both. And the lives of others. Despite the bizarre and often bloody scenes, In Bruges is a film about emotions and human passions. And because we tend to immediately pigeonhole films according to the plot, it is capable of eliciting contrasting emotions in the viewer. We decide in advance what we are going to see. Except that here, Martin McDonagh's creation somehow always manages to show another face. As you lose yourself in the urban idyll of the Christmas season, the story transforms itself into a crime thriller. As you become involved in the criminal plot, it becomes a love story. The sensitive scenes are replaced by a series of harsh images, love by regret, tears by laughter. It offers a unique experience, in other words, impossible to define.
