There is a reason that the most lavish critical acclaim associated with more recent Hungarian lyrical poetry - as well as most of its stereotypes - have been reserved for György Petri, whose career charts his experiences over a period of more than 30 years. A great poet who left a decisive mark on his era. A great poet who is essential to our understanding of the Kádár era.
A cool head and sober way of thinking with a constant need to maintain self-control, combined with a perpetual distrust of one's own self. The constant awareness that you should never deceive yourself - this is perhaps the 'message' of his words, one that is still relevant today. There is no question that herein lies the key to Petri's fame and popularity. As an artist he was without illusions, if not without hope. Although he is often esteemed for his political poems which appeared in the clandestinely published 1981 Örökhétfő, rest assured that the show's editor, the superb poet and writer Krisztina Tóth, will present a wider selection. If you like the idea of an intensive and stirring poetry evening, this event is not to be missed.
