"The youth problem peaked towards the summer of the 1960s,” sang Tamás Cseh in Hungary in 1976. But "Let sexuality be the opium of the decadent West,” as Comrade Virág tells Comradess Gogolák in Péter Bacsó's 1969 film The Witness. In the same year when Dr David Reuben's bestseller Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex hit the US book market. The book topped the sales charts in 51 countries. Somehow we were left out. So if one of our compatriots had been abroad watching a Woody Allen film, perhaps they wouldn't have realised it was a parody. We could have got away with the parodies hidden in the parody - Shakespeare, Antonioni, Frankenstein. (Apart from the parody of the American TV show.)
If someone thinks Woody Allen was fed up with the sexual revolution of the late sixties and expressed that in this wacky sketch/parody, they may be wrong. "Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex” is more about the question of what sex becomes when it is put into the hands of scientists, experts, show makers - in a word, tellers. If it becomes external, if the compulsion to comply is imposed on it... Half a century ago, this human social activity didn't even have the political base it does today. Because it is clear to all of us that this Woody Allen film could not even be made today because it would be considered politically incorrect. (Not to mention the accusations against the director in the meantime.) But it was a different world then. Viewers and critics at the time could even laugh at it, but it would be unfair if, in the perspective of time, we were held accountable for them today. "What is it worth to go back to the shadow of an old age?” as the poet asks. Or as another poet puts it: "Oh, those 60s, they could not help it.”
