It would be difficult to give an exact time when the idea of Europe shifted from a geographical concept to a common vision shared by many nations. If we had to, though, then we would have available not just one, but a long list of competing interpretations. One of these – and perhaps the one remaining the most tangible to this day – corresponds to developments in the artistic world. The pulsating and constantly changing urban culture that emerged during the fin-de-siècle period was closely related to a new language of art known throughout the continent as Art Nouveau. The Bridging Europe series offers an opportunity to gain some insight into the output of two pivotal representatives of that style. Their artistic visions fundamentally defined the look of the nascent metropolises Budapest and Brussels.
