Delicatessen – In French, with Hungarian subtitles

In the late eighties and early nineties, something important happened to the French film scene. For many, it was the return of New Wave cinema. Leos Carax, Jean-Jacques Beineix, Luc Besson, Jean-Pierre Jeunet and the rest unquestionably introduced – or rather re-introduced – a surreal, grotesque style full of black humour that redefined traditional film genres. And they were as subversive as the first New Wavers three decades earlier. Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro’s film Delicatessen was one of the era’s most powerful movies, mixing dystopia with a still fresh retro perspective. A brutal burlesque. And post-apocalyptic romance. And a way of pondering what will become of us if the idea that “thou shalt not eat thy fellow humans” is no longer a moral imperative. How can so many things fit into a single film? It’s not worth explaining. Watch it first; then we can talk about it.
