Unconquerable addictions. To sex, to drugs, and to each other. Jean-Jacques Beineix's film is a cult film, and as such has provoked mixed reactions. There are those who have seen it a dozen times (speaking of addiction), while others regard it as a masterpiece, or at least as one of the pillars of the cinéma du look movement, and there were also those who categorised it as a pathological case study, as trash, and as even verging on the pornographic. Now, with the passage of 30 years, it will be interesting to test ourselves to see how it moves us.
To describe the plot would be the simplest way to disparage it. But this would say nothing about the strange odyssey that its protagonists embark on. And it would reveal nothing about the magnetic field of passions that binds the characters together. In any case, Beineix is hardly one to be explained. Not to mention the fact that, after Diva (1981) and Betty Blue (1986), his style changed. And the same thing is indeed true for Luc Besson, who after Le Grand Bleu (1988) also headed off in a new direction, as we shall see presently.
