Returning from war, a soldier meets an old man: the devil in disguise. The old man wants the young man’s fiddle, offering him an all-knowing book in return. The deal is struck and the devil invites the soldier to spend three days with him. But when the soldier returns to his home village, he realises that he has been away not for three days but for three years, that his fiancée has married and that even his own mother does not recognise him. Thus begins The Soldier’s Tale, written by the poet Ramuz and the composer Stravinsky using elements of Russian folk tales. Their aim was to take a small travelling company on a tour of cities to present a theatrical work with music, narration and dance. The play relates the story of the soldier who has sold his soul to the Devil and his desperate struggle to free himself from evil’s grip. A series of exciting, startling twists and turns leads to an ending worthy of a bitterly ironic thriller.
