Purcell

Dido and Aeneas

Who wouldn't want to know what happens at an opera or ballet rehearsal, how folk music ensembles practice, what a day in the life of a jazz band looks like, or how a symphony orchestra works and prepares for a concert? The Behind the Scenes concerts provide a glimpse into the everyday work of musicians and - through directions and explanations, and the repeated practising and playing of individual passages - the musical process itself. In the second half of each programme, the audience will see and hear excerpts from the works they have already been introduced to in the context of an uninterrupted performance on stage.
This Henry Purcell opera deals with one of the most heart-wrenching stories of all time, in which the Trojan prince Aeneas and Dido, Queen of Carthage, find, and lose, one another. Their brief happiness is ended by the work of an evil sorcerer: In an act of deception, he calls upon the prince, at the behest of the gods, to leave Dido. Aeneas relents, breaking Dido's heart and causing her to die of disappointment and sadness. The eternal beauty of this ancient romantic tragedy and Purcell's wonderful music meet in this contemporary staged production, the creators of which not only demonstrate to the audience the complexity and all-encompassing nature of operatic staging, but also the creative process itself.

Between 9.45 and 10.30, we will be running a free (and playful) interactive session for children entitled Tune-Up. We look forward to welcoming groups and individuals who hold tickets to the subsequent performance. Register by sending an e-mail to csip@mupa.hu, stating the number of participants and their ages, by the Wednesday before the performance at the latest. The activity is recommended for children aged 6 and over, and will take place with a minimum of six children.
