Tchaikovsky
The Nutcracker
The Hungarian National Philharmonic, in collaboration with the Palace of Arts, has been performing The Nutcracker for years, each time working with different artistic ensembles and companies. It is never an easy task, since no matter how beautiful the show it puts on year after year, the oft-cited criticism is still heard that the plot of Tchaikovsky’s ballet is boring and the story too long-winded. Nowadays, Maria, Drosselmeyer, the Mouse King, Stahlbaum and the inhabitants of the Land of Sweets can scarcely excite a young generation brought up on computer games. The present production, however, is abundant in action, twists and spectacle, offering an enjoyable escape for children both big and small, and their parents, in the run-up to Christmas.
