Tárkány Trio:
Upon hearing the Hungarian word 'prímás', the image of the lead violinist in a Gypsy band is invoked in the minds of those with a basic knowledge of music. Few people are aware, however, that a cimbalom player can also be the 'prímás'. In such cases, they are the one to take over the melody and lead the band. The Tárkány Trió folk band was created from the Tárkány Művek (Tárkány Works) collective, founded in 2008. In the newer group, alongside the band leader Bálint Tárkány-Kovács, viola player Márton Fekete and double bass player Péter Molnár wow their audiences with virtuoso interpretations of Hungarian, Romanian, Gypsy and Sinto music. Tárkány-Kovács believes their pioneering work is not merely a careful reconstruction of older music: instead, new paths are being unearthed and travelled through in this ancient yet familiar landscape.
