Symphonic Journey: The Orchestra
7 May 2011 Saturday
9 am - 10:30 am
Glass Hall
Instru-mentor
Capriccio Orchestra (artistic director: Ágnes Juhász)

It is some 250 years since Concertmeister Johann Stamitz assembled his innovative ensemble in Mannheim, putting instruments together in a configuration resembling a modern symphonic orchestra (two violin sections, viola, lower strings, two horns and two tympanists). The sound of the symphony orchestra was then developed further by Joseph Haydn, whose orchestra comprised around 30 musicians. The symphony orchestra was later expanded to include, for example, a variety of percussion instruments. Eventually the conductor was added, whose job is not only to guide the orchestra and to hold the music together, but also to impart a unified concept of the work to the participating musicians to ensure they perform in a true “concord of sound” (symphony).
