Morning Song

Schumann

Dichterliebe, (‘A Poet's Love'), Op. 48 - No. 12: Am leuchtenden Sommermorgen (‘On a radiant summer morning')

A true chef can produce an unusual menu even from the most traditional of ingredients: the next instalment of the Musical Dissection programme is being offered not only to gourmets. ‘Partnering' this time with Szeder (that is, Krisztina Szeder-Szabó and the rest of her trio), which combines influences from popular music, French chanson, jazz and folk sources in a unique style, will be none other than that great master of Romantic songs Robert Schumann. At this friendly encounter complete with expert explanations, we will find out how extremely diverse flavours can be created from what are, deep down, surprisingly similar ingredients. True fusion cooking, Müpa Budapest style!

Pop music can also be serious, and classical music is not necessarily heavy-going. This is the premise the Musical Dissection series is built around. Whatever your age, attentive listening is the key to understanding music. Host Gergely Fazekas, will show his audience the parallels and similarities between Schumann's music and the songs of the successful contemporary singer on stage with him. Also assisting him alongside Szeder and her ensemble, in performing Robert Schumann's song, will be Hungarian State Opera baritone Attila Erdős and pianist Alexandra Balog, who divides her life between London and Budapest. Szeder's 2014 number Reggeli dal (‘Morning Song') gives musical form and metaphorical significance to the early hours of the day in the same way that Schumann's song Am leuchtenden Sommermorgen, composed in 1840, does. Despite the fact that the two pieces are separated by more than a century and a half and were born out of completely different artistic milieus, they are actually connected at more points than we might initially think. At this concert, mapping the common points will be just as important a goal as noting the differences. As will be seeing how both occupy important places in the hundreds of years of history of songs about the morning.

The event will be followed by a free activity session on Banner Square entitled Reverberation for groups holding tickets to the performance.
