János Háy is one of the most popular writers in contemporary Hungarian literature: his books sell in large volumes, and his fans always fill the auditorium for his theatrical performances. An author, poet, and one of Hungary's most successful playwrights, who also offers emphatic and often non-canonical opinions on Hungarian classics, too.

During the four mornings of this lecture series, Háy will speak about pairs of well-known writers from Hungarian literature. He will discuss writers who, even if they might have had some kind of connection during their career, can only be seen up close together in posterity. The poets and writers are not presented as statues, there is no cult-building here. Instead, the revealed relationship will give us a more tangible and intimate understanding of both work and creator. Sándor Petőfi and János Arany, Endre Ady and Mihály Babits, Lőrinc Szabó and Attila József, György Petri and Péter Hajnóczy. Well-matched pairs and unusual connections, but in each case there is a relationship elicited between the two authors that enables us to encounter and understand their life's work on a more profound and fundamental level. The series seeks to encourage us to win back the intimacy of poems and short stories from the curriculum both well-known and forgotten, regaining that elusive secret through which they communicate to us, and that which makes them our own.
